The Best Exercise in the World?
April 18, 2014

It’s probably the Burpee. The Burpee is an excellent full-body movement that engages large muscle groups, builds balance, strength, and endurance all at once. It can be used as a warm-up or the only move in a day’s exercise routine. Aim to do at least 15 burpees in a row without stopping. This intense, if mildly torturous exercise, has been called the single best exercise in the world.

How to do a Burpee:

  1. Start in a standing position.
  2. Quickly drop to the ground to do a pushup.
  3. Quickly stand back up
  4. Raise both hands over your head and jump up in the air
  5. Repeat

Tips for better Burpees:

Keep perfect form: pushups should be in a plank, and jumps should be straight up and down. This makes the workout both harder and safer.

Do it in one fluid movement. If your form collapses, you’re doing too many. Smooth transitions are controlled transitions, so your chances of getting hurt are much lower.

Don’t overdo it. Some “Burpee challenges” ask people to increase their maximum Burpees until reaching 200 in a day. That’s not a great idea. When fatigued, we tend to land harder on our wrists getting to the pushup position, risking injury in a particularly vulnerable part of our bodies.
